My Experience at
Ronald McDonald  Charities House of Rochester (RMHCR)

The summer of 2020 was different from what most of us expected. Even though most of my internship opportunities were canceled, I was still eager to get to work. In June, I reached out to Krystle Ellis, Director of Communications and Special Events at Ronald McDonald House Charities of Rochester NY, to see if I could help out during the summer. I am so grateful that Krystle was willing to bring me onto her team to offer my support with social media and event planning. Over the course of my three months at RMHCR, I became familiar with Hootsuite and learned how to manage a social media content calendar. I designed more than 20 social media posts and created captions for other content, and I was the lead on creating the gift baskets for the 30th Anniversary Gala.

When I was brought onto the team as a Marketing Intern, both the Ronald McDonald House of Rochester and RMHCR's House Within the Hospital were not open for families. The closure of the houses placed a great burden on the families of patients and made navigating the COVID pandemic even more stressful. For this reason, RMHCR needed "all hands on deck" to work on re-opening. My key project as a Marketing Intern at RMHCR was to turn all of the important information on the re-opening plan into graphics for social media and the television screens within the house.

In addition to creating these graphics, I was responsible for interacting with anyone who reached out to us via our social media platforms. During COVID, many of our families were left without the resources they needed to get through a tough time. With the help of Krystle and the rest of the staff at RMHCR, I was able to communicate with these families and get them the resources they needed. While the circumstances were challenging and greatly impacted our families, I also saw our community come together to support those in need. Several followers of our accounts reached out looking for ways to get involved with the re-opening project. I helped a woman from a local church organize a donation drive where community members could drop off the supplies on our "urgent need" list.

I learned a lot from my experience at RMHCR. Krystle was an incredible mentor who allowed me to take the lead on several projects. She taught me the importance of having a call-to-action on every social media post along with how I can represent our mission in every design. Ronald McDonald House Charities is an organization dedicated to improving the health and well-being of children by providing families with the medical care and resources they need. I am honored that I had to opportunity to work alongside Krystle and the rest of the RMHCR team, and see firsthand how an organization can change the lives of many for the better.
